To Express What is: Studio Visit with painter, Ál Varo Tavares d’Guilherme.

We got the chance to drop by on Angolan-bord, Lisbon-raised, and now Berlin-based expressionist painter, Ál Varo Tavares d’Guilherme. We talked about his tumultuous path into the life of an artist, experiences from his earlier days, and his contemporary relationship to his practice.

Demanding Female Autonomy through Cinema. Interview with Director, Andrea Hoyos.

In the warmth of her homely Neukölln kitchen, we talked more in depth about the origins of her artistic impulses, how she managed state funding for such an anti-government film, and how the film went on to become a beacon in the female autonomy movement in Peru before they suffered the blow of censorship.

Collaging Different Worlds: Studio Visit with Object Designer, Anton Defant.

Anton is an intriguing object designer whose work embodies both a sense of playfulness and a sense of seriousness which, on paper, doesn't seem like it would make sense, but in reality, somehow does. And so we talked about this; his ironic sensibilities, his use of everyday symbols, and his interest in deconstructing preconceived notions of objects. Enjoy.

Preserving Cultural Identity in Exile: Interview with the founders of Berlin's Tibet Film Festival.

If mice could hear, this one would have learned of the fascinating journey that led to founding the festival; a journey of igniting a platform to uplift Tibetan art and film, in turn helping to preserve a culture often overshadowed by politics. The pair enlightened us to the unique state of Tibetan cinema, the complexity of nurturing a cultural identity in exile, and both the difficulties but also rewards of creating their platform with such limited material support.

Robot Arms, Found Forms, and the Joy of Making: Studio Visit with Designer, Matthias Gschwendtner.

We enjoy his work also because of how responsive it is to his surroundings. As he breathes life into discarded or overlooked materials, he showcases the potential beauty of all objects and prompts us to reconsider our perceptions of the world around us. We talked about his fascination with found objects, how he fixed a €2000 industrial robot from ebay kleinanzeigen, and what's been influencing him recently.

Living a Moment in Front of a Lens. Interview with Actor, Luka Dimic.

This week we're excited to welcome our first actor to the HUNDHUND Stories series. After escaping the Yugoslavian war as a child, Luka Dimic grew up in Germany, discovering his identity as a performer whilst studying in Berlin. Dimic then spent several years in the theatre between Bern and Vienna before making the leap to film and co-starring in the newly released, award-winning Eismayer (2022) — a true-based film about a queer love story in the Austrian army.

"We are just another material". Interview with Interdisciplinary Artist, Åsa Cederqvist.

We recently caught up with Åsa Cederqvist — a fascinating Swedish artist using a variety of mediums to explore human behavior and our profound connection with nature. Åsa's work facilitates a dialogue that transcends rational boundaries, serving as an uplifting journey into our immateriality and a positive call-to-action for greater empathy for and connection with our environment.

Depicting the Fireiness of Anxiety. Studio Visit with Painter, Adam Lupton.

Recently we caught up with painter Adam Lupton, a fresh import to the Berlin cultural scene from NYC. Adam’s unique approach is somewhat of an interplay between painting, printmaking and craft — which is why it’s particularly heartbreaking that you’re now viewing his works through a screen. The in-person viewing experience offers a delightful journey of textures, processes and styles contained within the same canvas that pixels simply don’t do justice. Last month, we paid a visit to Adam’s Moabit studio and learned from the artist himself about the evolution of his practice, the story of his colour palette, and his introspective subject matter.

How You Can Help Ukrainian Animals. Interview with Leonie Stein from WAYKS Berlin.

We recently saw that our good friends at WAYKS Berlin did a beautiful thing by using the revenue from their Black Friday sales to buy an entire ton of pet food for Petners — an animal rescue organisation supporting vulnerable animals in Ukraine. Many of these animals have found new families to live with across Europe from Barcelona to Berlin, such as with Leonie, co-founder of WAYKS, the now proud owner of Gerda.

In Search of Beautiful Misunderstandings: Studio Visit with Installation Artist, Asako Shiroki.

A couple of weeks ago we dropped in on Japanese-born, Berlin-based installation artist, Asako Shiroki. It was a sad and rainy afternoon in Berlin, but a warm and lovely conversation in the shelter of Asako’s Schöneberg studio — which as funny coincidence would have it, I was no stranger to, having visited it a year and a half ago to interview Asako’s husband, Sanghyeok, about his conceptually-driven furniture pieces. This day, though, was about Asako, and it was a pleasure to hear the story of her practice; from jewellery to installation art, bringing traditional Japanese wood joinery to Berlin, and the process of creating “beautiful misunderstandings”.

The Authentic Unconscious: Studio Visit with Painter, Gala Lillian Glotzbach.

This week we spoke to Gala Lillian Glotzbach — a young, Berlin-born painter whose dreamy compositions caught our eye on Instagram a couple of weeks ago. Despite being in the throes of preparation for her upcoming solo exhibition, Gala was kind enough to host us in her studio for a green tea and a delightful conversation about her practice. We talked about the cathartic yet draining qualities of her introspective expressions, the evolution of her colour palettes, and her connection to her Caribbean roots.

Finding a Symbiosis Between Process and Form: Studio Visit with Sculptor, Vero Janovec.

Sometimes I feel we must’ve exhausted our extended network of Berlin artists for these interviews. But then, sometimes, I’ll serendipitously stumble across someone entirely new whose work I immediately fall in love with. Vero Janovec is one of those people. I found Vero’s work on Instagram and was immediately allured by the primordial qualities of her abstract sculptures. I wanted to know more about her practice. And so, a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to meet Vero at her home for a cup of coffee and a delightfully tangential conversation about her influences, her thoughts on meaning behind work, and how her sculptures relate to nature.

“Words Are Not That Important”: Interview with Queer Artist & Performer, Boji Moroz.

I first found myself in the company of Boji Moroz at a Halloween gathering last October. I still have a vivid memory of turning around one moment to discover everyone had fallen silent and Boji was standing on a chair, spotlit with an iPhone flashlight, offering a seemingly impromptu vocal performance. It was a soulful, operatic voice that controlled the room. I wanted to learn more about Boji as an artist — and, thankfully, they were kind enough to oblige, paying a visit to the studio one evening for an interview.

Catching Distortions of Reality. Studio Visit with Ukrainian Photographer Victoria Pidust.

This week we visited photographic artist, Victoria Pidust, at her Weisensee studio. We were introduced to Victoria by a member of the studio family — Laura — and when our eyes first found her unique, abstract explorations in photography, we knew we had to talk to her. Victoria was kind enough to invite us to her studio to show us her prints, drink some tea, and share her stories of building tank obstacles in Ukraine after the invasion, how she found photography, and why she is so drawn to capturing distortions of reality.

Capturing the Solitude of Being: Interview with Documentary Photographer, Massimiliano Corteselli.

Massimiliano Corteselli was recently introduced to me by a good friend, and whilst sharing a beer one evening a few weeks ago in Prenzlauer Berg, he told me of his project documenting wildfires in Southern Italy. When he showed me some of the photographs on his phone, however, I was surprised and intrigued by the strange and varied conceptual approaches he’d explored to create these compositions. I was interested to hear more about Massi’s practice — in a slightly more sober mind — and thankfully, he was kind enough to invite me to his studio to chat over a coffee and show me some of his prints.

“A Little in Architecture, Colours, Materials and Nature”: Studio Visit with Marten Herma Anderson.

Architect, ceramicist and illustrator, Marten Herma Anderson’s broader practice may be described as a harmony between this trio of varying disciplines, as he allows his work within each to inform and enrich the others. We became a fan of Marten on Instagram through his ceramic works, so it was a delight to connect with him and be invited to his studio to learn about the intricacies of his artistic, expressive and honest approach to design.

A photographic artist, writer and dancer. Kenny Sang’s work converses with themes too seldomly discussed in mainstream spheres. The complex interplay between masculinity, sexuality and fetishization, and the unique tensions one deals with when experiencing these concepts as a black male — Kenny’s artistic and photographic voice is a strong one in the important, ongoing discourse around these ideas.

Investigating the Multitude of the Self. Studio Visit with Artist, Margaret Flatley.

From sculpting with clay to making life-sized candles to tracing her own form onto giant canvases, artist Margaret Flatley’s methods are as meandering and compelling as the conversation I was delighted to have with her over a green tea last week. At her Kreuzberg studio on (if my memory serves) a classically drizzly Berlin morning, Margaret was kind enough to show me around both her studio and her mind as we discussed her openness to exploring new methodologies, her relationship to photography, and her conceptually-guided approach to practice.

A couple of weeks ago I was taking some photos of one of our new pieces on the studio terrace when a young man approached me.
