This Black Friday Weekend: We're Working with Plastic Fischer to Remove 2 Tonnes of Plastic Waste From Indian Rivers.

Mindful consumption is at the essence of what we do — which means that for Black Friday weekend, it’s important for us to do more than just discount (although we do that too and it’s the only time of the year we really discount in the middle of a season!). As such, we would like to offer our customers an opportunity to help out with a meaningful cause during this time. Last year our customers planted trees with us — this year, together, we're helping to remove 2 tonnes of plastic from polluted Indian rivers, in collaboration with Plastic Fischer.

Plastic Fischer is a social enterprise founded in 2018 by three friends on a trip to Vietnam who witnessed the intensity of the plastic pollution issue in the Mekong River. They went on to learn that 90% of the plastic in the ocean enters through rivers and 80% of river plastic stems from only ~1000 rivers. As a result, they created Plastic Fischer with the idea that if they just focus on these 1000 rivers, they can make a major impact on the problem of ocean plastics.

Plastic Fischer's solution uses a low-cost technology they developed called a TrashBoom — a device that floats at the top 60cm of the water collecting surface trash whilst allowing marine life to pass freely underneath. The plastic is then collected daily and taken to sorting facilities — a process that creates jobs and involves the local community. And something we really love about Plastic Fischer is their open-source approach — they're entirely transparent with their technology and encourage people to replicate it, allowing anyone, anywhere in the world the chance to take action against plastic pollution themselves.

We really connected with this idea as we have our own paralleled history with these issues. Our founders, Isabel and Rohan, first met in India and it was after witnessing first-hand the extreme environmental and social impact of the garment industry that the vision for Hund Hund was formed. The image of the polluted black Mahim river running through Mumbai stays in our minds and reminds us of the importance of social enterprises like Plastic Fischer. And so, as well as offering a 20% discount to our customers to make our clothes a little more financially accessible, we thought we'd do something nice together, to help us all move in the right direction.

Cleaner Rivers means cleaner oceans. I think that’s something we can all get behind.

Have a great week.

- The HUNDHUND team.
